TASP’s main activities include the adaptive ski program operating daily during the winter at the Telluride Ski Area and a mix of focused summer sports programs. We also conduct clinics and special events including the Expand Your Horizons! Ski Camp-for advanced skiers with disabilities, cycling clinics, Nordic and snowshoe clinics and more. TASP also provides volunteer opportunities, training for staff and volunteers, scholarships for students needing financial assistance and adaptive equipment. This past winter, we initiated a Wounded Warriors project for Troops injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. We plan to expand this project and host three weeklong events for active duty servicemen/women and Vets with disabilities this winter and next summer. Through these activities, our participants develop increased physical awareness, balance and strength as well as an incredible sense of accomplishment. TASP has been growing strategically and methodically, serving an increasing number of students and incrementally expanding activities and resources.
Our team of professionally trained instructors and volunteers assess student needs, set up appropriate adaptive equipment and provide instruction or ski buddy and guiding services. TASP offers a variety of adaptive methods and equipment including the monoski, biski, dualski, 3-track and 4-track skis, blind guiding and adaptations on skis or snowboards. Participants range in age from four to 84 and may have physical, emotional and cognitive disabilities.
TASP also conducts disability awareness training for local school aged youth. This innovative program exposes grade school students to people with disabilities, adaptive skiing and our program. The goal is to help students understand that people with disabilities are regular people who enjoy skiing just like we all do! Students participate in experiential activities on the slopes including use of adaptive equipment and practicing blind guiding. Students develop an increased awareness of the challenges people with disabilities have on a daily basis; some of the attitudinal barriers imposed by society; and the positive impact programs like TASP provide to our community. This project also serves as an introduction to the volunteer service learning opportunities through TASP.
TASP and Telluride Ski Resort have a unique and mutually beneficial relationship committed to excellent customer service for skiers and snowboarders with disabilities, families and friends that creates access to the slopes for all.
